#98: WeAreDevelopers week is full of events. Did you get our guide?
July 6 — The Twilio, Notion, and Miro teams are in Berlin and ready to mingle.
Hey 👋 Ampli community.
The clouds replaced the intense sun this weekend, and all we wanted was to sit outside. But the rain had other plans when the wind made it feel colder, and the jackets we’d put away had to come back out.
Welcome to our Monday weather hindsight, where we give voice to Berlin’s favorite vanilla topic to complain about.
So let’s get into it.
Builders and developers, Twilio is in town
This is your reminder that the Twilio Assemble is happening in two days and they’re bringing together a select group of local developers and builders for a high-energy half-day experience focused entirely on the future of AI and Communications.
🤝 In partnership with Twilio
With limited spots available this is your chance to explore their newest product suite for the AI landscape and get the inspiration to build next-generation customer experiences.

Microsoft, AWS, OpenAI, and Anthropic all launched “embed engineers inside customers” businesses in one month — Microsoft Frontier Company launched July 2 with $2.5B and 6,000 engineers. AWS committed $1B two days earlier. The pattern is now industry-wide: impressive AI demos haven’t translated into measurable enterprise results, so the AI providers are sending their own engineers to build inside customer operations.

The EU AI Act August 2 deadline is 4 weeks away — The EU Council formally adopted the Digital Omnibus on June 29, pushing high-risk AI obligations to December 2027. But August 2 is still the deadline for transparency rules — chatbot disclosure, AI-generated content labeling (watermarking), and GPAI model obligations. For product teams: every AI feature that interacts with EU users needs a disclosure design in place before August. Violations carry fines up to 3% of global revenue.

Most AI teams pick the model first and the architecture second — Theory Ventures VC Tomasz Tunguz argues the real decision is the router: a small piece of code that classifies each task and sends it to the cheapest model tier that can handle it. Get it right and 70-80% of agent traffic runs on local models (near-zero cost) or async batch models. Coinbase cut AI spend in half while token usage grew, not with alerts, but with better defaults, routing, and caching. The practical frame: pick your models last.

Earlybird just closed its largest-ever fund at €360M — and kept ownership entirely with active partners — Berlin-based Earlybird VC’s Fund VIII is the firm’s biggest fund ever, focused on early-stage pan-European tech. While several European VCs are exploring external ownership or partial sales, Earlybird is explicitly preserving independence by ensuring ownership transfers only to active partners. In a week when EU-Startups mapped the 10 largest European VC closes of 2026 (more on this in the last piece), Earlybird’s approach is a quiet statement about what long-term founder alignment actually looks like.

The EU Commission just awarded its Frontier AI Grand Challenge — the winner will build Europe’s sovereign open-source frontier model in all 24 EU languages — The EUROPA consortium won the Commission’s challenge on June 19, tasked with building Europe’s first frontier-class open-source AI model across all 24 official EU languages. The research question it’s trying to answer: can a government-backed consortium produce a genuinely competitive frontier model, or does that require the market incentives of a commercial lab?

A Sentry engineer spent four months and 100K lines of TypeScript building a Slack AI agent — David Cramer (Sentry co-founder) built “Junior”, an open-source intern-in-Slack. The gap between “put an agent in Slack” and a production-ready system is 100K lines of TypeScript and four months of work. Required reading for anyone scoping an AI agent project, and for PMs setting realistic timelines.

Where Europe’s €3.29B in new VC is concentrated — and what that tells you about where to build a career in 2026 — EU-Startups mapped the 10 largest European VC vehicles raised so far in 2026: DeepTech (Kembara €750M first close), DefenceTech, AI, climate, and early-stage software infrastructure dominate. The practical read: the sectors these funds back today are the sectors hiring in 12–18 months.
